Tried at Old Bailey, London. Accused of murder (he, not having the fear of god before his eyes, but being instigated by the devil on the 17th of may last in the king's highway, in and upon john herd , feloniously and maliciously and of his malice aforethought did make an assault, and a certain pistol charged with gun-powder and divers leaden slugs, which he the said francis gray then and there had and held in his right hand, feloniously and wilfully and of his malice aforethought did shoot and discharge: and the said francis gray with the leaden slugs aforesaid, in and upon the face of the said john herd , near the eyes of him the said john herd , feloniously, forcibly, and wilfully, did strike, penetrate, and wound: the said francis gray thereby giving to the said john herd , in and upon the face of the said john herd , near the eyes of the said john herd , one mortal wound of the depth of four inches, and of the breadth of four inches; of which said mortal wound he instantly died). Found guilty. Sentenced to death and dissection. Sentence outcome was executed.
