How did the most common criminal sentences changes over time?

This zoomable treemap allows you examine the distribution of punishment sentences for defendants convicted at the Old Bailey. By adjusting each end of the slider bar, you can focus on sentences within a specific time period and see how the distribution of sentences changed significantly over time. This chart was adopted from https://bost.ocks.org/mike/treemap/. The slider was adapted from http://benheb.github.io/d3.slider/.

Note that, as explained in the Penal Outcomes research page, the sentences imposed in the Old Bailey courtroom did not automatically translate into the punishments actually carried out. For a number of reasons, most often because the convict received a free or conditional pardon, many convicts received a different, lesser punishment from the one they were sentenced to.
