Subjects of tattoos by convict's religion

These pie charts, created using the visualisation feature on this website, indicate the distribution of subjects of tattoos according to the convicts' religion. Note that most Digital Panopticon records do not provide the convicts' religion, so these charts are based on a relatively small number of cases, primarily from the records of prison parole licences. While there are some subtle differences, and the specific designs of tattoos may have differed, the overall distribution of tattoo subjects between Protestant and Catholic convicts is remarkably similar. The 'mixed' pie chart includes the surprisingly large number of convicts whose stated religion differed in the various documents we have about them. Note that the pie charts on the second row of the table do not contain sufficient numbers of cases to generate meaningful results.
